このたび、Azure Storage で静的 Web サイトのホスティングのパブリック プレビューを開始しました。すべてのパブリック クラウド リージョンで利用可能で、今後、政府機関向けリージョンおよび国営クラウドもサポートする予定です。

この新しいストレージ機能セットを使用すると、コスト効率の良いスケーラブルなソリューションを構築して、Azure で最新の統合型 Web アプリケーションをホストできるようになります。静的 Web サイトでは、Web ページに静的コンテンツと JavaScript などのクライアント側のコードが含まれます。一方、動的 Web サイトはサーバー側のコードに依存するため、Azure Web Apps でホストすることができます。弾力性が高くコスト効率の良いモデルへの移行が進む中で、サーバー管理のいらない Web コンテンツ配信機能が求められています。Azure Storage の静的 Web サイト ホスティングなら、Azure Functions などの PaaS サービスを活用したサーバーレス アーキテクチャの優れたバックエンド機能によって、このニーズに応えることができます。

しくみ

ストレージ アカウントで静的 Web サイトを有効化すると、次の形式の Web サービス エンドポイントが新規作成されます。

<アカウント名>.<ゾーン名>.web.core.windows.net

この Web サービス エンドポイントは、匿名の読み込みアクセスを常時許可し、サービス エラー発生時に指定の HTML ページを返し、さらにオブジェクト読み込み処理のみを許可します。また、要求されたルート ディレクトリとすべてのサブディレクトリのインデックス ドキュメントを返します。カスタム エラー ドキュメントを構成しておくと、ストレージ サービスが 404 エラーになった際に Web エンドポイントがそのエラー ドキュメントを返します。

使用を開始するには

この機能セットは、最新リリースの Azure ポータル、.NET クライアント ライブラリ (バージョン 9.3.0、英語)、Java クライアント ライブラリ (バージョン 8.0.0、英語)、Python クライアント ライブラリ (バージョン 1.3.0、英語)、Node.js クライアント ライブラリ (バージョン 2.10.0、英語)、Visual Studio Code 拡張機能 (バージョン 0.4.0、英語)、CLI 2.0 (拡張バージョン 0.1.3、英語) でサポートされます。今後 Storage Explorer と Powershell (英語) もサポートされる予定です。また、Storage Services REST API (英語) を直接使用することもできます。静的 Web サイトは、REST API バージョン 2018-03-28 以降でサポートされます。なお、この機能を使用するかどうかにかかわらず、最新バージョンを使用されることをお勧めします。

Azure Storage で Web アプリケーションのホストを開始する場合は、次のスクリーンショットのように Azure ポータルからこの機能を構成します。Azure ポータルで GPv2 ストレージ アカウントを作成するか、または既存の GPv2 アカウントで、左側のナビゲーション バーで [settings]、[static website (preview)] の順に選択し、[Enabled] をクリックしてインデックス ドキュメントの名前とカスタム エラー ドキュメントのパス (オプション) を入力します。

静的 Web サイトを有効化するときに作成される $web コンテナーに Web アセットをアップロードします。この操作は、Azure ポータルから行うことも、Visual Studio Code 拡張機能 (英語) を使用してディレクトリ構造全体をアップロードすることもできます。$web コンテナーを右クリックして [Deploy to static website] を選択してから、アップロードするディレクトリを指定します。このとき、自身で構成したインデックス ドキュメントの名前を必ず含めてください。この例では、ドキュメントの名前は「index.html」となっています。

最後に、Web エンドポイントに移動して Web サイトをテストします。カスタム サーバーレス Web アプリの構築 (英語) のチュートリアルで、Web サイトにさまざまな機能を追加する方法を説明していますのでそちらもご確認ください。

みなさま、こんにちは。WSUS サポート チームです。

今回は「配信したい更新プログラムが WSUS 上に同期されてこない！」という場合に、実施すべき対応や一般的に考えられる要因について紹介をしてまいります。

対応方法

まずは WSUS 上に本当に更新プログラムが存在しないか、念のため検索して確認を行います。

WSUS 管理コンソール上の以下の箇所より、同期されている更新プログラムの検索が可能ですので、KB 番号やタイトル等から対象の更新プログラムが同期されていないか確認を行います。

もし検索結果に対象の更新プログラムが存在しない場合には、個別に Microsoft Update カタログから対象の更新プログラムをインポートする方法がオススメです。インポートの手順については、以下のブログにて紹介しているので、こちらをご参考にしてください。

考えられる要因

ではなぜこのような事が発生してしまうのでしょうか。よくあるパターンとして以下のような要因が考えられます。

• 「製品と分類」の設定にて、対象の更新プログラムの製品や分類が選択されていない
• 対象の更新プログラムが WSUS へ公開されていない
• 弊社サイトと WSUS の同期に失敗している

「製品と分類」の設定にて、対象の更新プログラムの製品や分類が選択されていない

対象の更新プログラムが、リリースされている製品や分類にチェックが入っていない場合には、WSUS 上に対象の更新プログラムは同期されてきません。対象の更新プログラムの製品や分類については、Microsoft Update カタログから確認が出来ます。

例えば、Microsoft Update カタログ上で検索して、以下のように表示される更新プログラムは、製品は「Windows 10 Anniversary Update and Later Servicing Drivers」、分類は「ドライバ」としてリリースされています。このため、以下の更新プログラムについてはオプションの「製品と分類」にて、この両方にチェックが入っていないと同期されてきません。

「製品と分類」の設定を変更し、今回必要な製品や分類にチェックを入れてしまう方法も対処の 1 つではあるのですが、必要な更新プログラム以外も同期されて来てしまうため、対処方法としてはあまりオススメできません。上述の通り、カタログからインポートする方法であれば、必要な更新プログラムだけを同期出来るため、こちらについて実施をご検討ください。

対象の更新プログラムが WSUS へ公開されていない

更新プログラムの中には、そもそも WSUS で自動的に承認・配信されないように、敢えて更新プログラムの開発したチームが WSUS へ直接公開していないものもあります。

こういった更新プログラムでも、Microsoft Update カタログ上に存在する更新プログラムであれば、インポートし WSUS から配信することが可能なので、上述の対応方法を実施いただけます。

弊社サイトと WSUS の同期に失敗している

弊社サイトと WSUS の同期に失敗している場合には、新しい更新プログラムについて WSUS 上に着信出来ません。

なぜ失敗しているかは個別にトラブル シューティングが必要ですが、WSUS 上でいつ同期が行われたか、また同期の結果については管理コンソール上の以下の箇所より確認が可能です。

現象
OWA の受信トレイのルールにて、リダイレクト先に [個人の連絡先] を設定した場合、設定した [個人の連絡先] の “「姓」「名」“と同様の cn 値を持つ受信者が AD 上に存在すると、リダイレクト先が AD 上の受信者に置き換わる事象が発生します。
例えば以下のようなメールボックスおよび連絡先アイテムが存在する環境において、リダイレクト先として連絡先アイテム "test 01" を選択すると、リダイレクト先の SMTP アドレスは AD 上のメールボックスに設定された user1@mt.local となります。

以下の通り、実際に保存されたルールの編集画面においても、AD 上の受信者がリダイレクト先として保存されていることを確認可能です。

 
回避策
本事象はルール保存の際に GAL 上でオブジェクトの検索が行われることに起因し発生しますが、以下のいずれかの方法で回避することが可能です。

1) Outlook でルールを作成する
2) リダイレクト先の指定時に連絡先アイテムを使用するのではなく、SMTP アドレス (上記例では user2@contoso.com) を直接入力する
3) 管理者が Exchange 管理シェルより New-InboxRule を使用しルールを作成する

New-InboxRule にてルールを作成する場合も、RedirectTo には SMTP アドレスを直接入力します。条件は任意に変更ください。

[実行例]
New-InboxRule -Name Inbox01 -MyNameInToOrCcBox $True -RedirectTo user2@contoso.com
 
その他
本事象は、本 Blog 執筆時点での最新 CU である Exchange Server 2013 CU21 において発生することが確認されておりますが、Exchange Server 2013 は既に延長サポート フェーズのため現時点で修正の予定はなく、製品の制限事項となっております。お客様にはご不便をおかけいたしますが、ご理解承りますようお願いいたします。

A quick one today. In the first post on Azure SQL Data Warehouse, we introduced the key business benefits of the service. Namely, the ability to scale on demand, and being able to pause and restart the service at will.

The ability to scale a SQL Data Warehouse on demand provides several benefits:

1. You can increase the compute of SQL Data Warehouse during periods of heavy demand. Heavy demand can either include a period of sustained data loads, or periods of heavy querying. You can scale up compute during these peak periods, and then reduce compute when the demand is not there.
2. You can control the cost of the data warehouse. The ability to change compute at will also enables you to control the costs of the data warehouse. Pricing can be found at the following page. Note that the price is broken down into the cost of the compute and the cost of storing the data.

There are several methods with which you can scale a SQL Data Warehouse. The following video shows how you can scale using the Azure Portal:

Alternatively, you can also scale the data warehouse using the following TSQL code:

ALTER DATABASE ContosoRetailDW
MODIFY (service_objective = ‘DW100’);

You can even use PowerShell to scale the data warehouse:

Your organisation may face a period where no access to the data held in a data warehouse is required. Perhaps, during the holiday season, your organisation informs the staff that IT maintenance is being performed over the holidays and that access to data and network resources is not guaranteed. In this case, you can pause the Azure SQL Data Warehouse. This means that you won’t be charged for the compute aspect of the warehouse, only the storage aspect. You can pause the service using the Azure Portal as shown in the following video:

Suspend-AzureRmSqlDatabase `
–ResourceGroupName “RG_name” `
–ServerName “SRV_name” `
–DatabaseName “DB_name”

You can resume the Azure SQL Data Warehouse with similar PowerShell Code:

These simple steps can be used to help you scale and pause the service when you need it, giving you control of both performance and costs.

Announced today, the Microsoft Whiteboard is now GA for all Windows 10 devices.

The Microsoft Whiteboard app was in preview for a year or so and will be updated using the Microsoft Store from Microsoft Whiteboard (Preview) to Microsoft Whiteboard.

For Surface Hub, The existing whiteboard (Microsoft Whiteboard 2016) will continue to be the default whiteboard app and will launch when the pen is picked up (Don't tell me you didn't that!!) or from the Welcome screen.

Heads up for some limitations:

•  The existing app (Microsoft Whiteboard 2016) cannot collaborate with Surface Hubs running the new version (Microsoft Whiteboard).
• Screen clipping will not launch the whiteboard app when the two versions of Whiteboard are installed side-by-side on a Surface Hub.
• The new version currently supports exporting whiteboards as .png files only. So no emails or export to OneNote files (Though you can access the whiteboard from your PC at any time!)

O, tomen el ejemplo de Urban Agriculture Company, una empresa pequeña que se especializa en kits de productos orgánicos, fáciles de utilizar, de vegetales, flores y hierbas. Después de aterrizar en las cosas favoritas de Oprah, su fundador Chad Corzine se cambió a Microsoft 365 Business y a Teams para gestionar las comunicaciones entre sus departamentos cada vez más grandes, integrar empleados y proteger los datos de los clientes.

2 – Utilizar nuevas capacidades inteligentes de evento en Microsoft 365

Hoy, también presentamos nuevas capacidades que permiten a todas las personas en su organización crear eventos en vivo y bajo demanda en Microsoft 365. Los eventos pueden ser vistos en tiempo real o bajo demanda con video en alta definición y discusión interactiva.

Los servicios impulsados por IA mejoran la experiencia bajo demanda con:

• Una línea de tiempo del orador, que utiliza detección facial para identificar quién habla, para que puedan saltar de manera sencilla a un orador en particular en el evento.
• Transcripción de habla a texto, código de tiempo, y búsqueda de transcripción, para que puedan encontrar momentos que importen de manera rápida en una grabación.
• Subtítulos para hacer el evento más accesible para todos.

Los eventos pueden ser tan simples o sofisticados como lo prefieran. Pueden utilizar cámaras web, contenido, y compartir sus pantallas para presentaciones informales, o transmitir una producción con calidad de estudio para eventos más formales.

3 – Aprovechar la analítica para construir mejores hábitos de colaboración

Lanzamos la versión previa de una nueva solución de Workplace Analytics, que utiliza información de valor de colaboración desde Microsoft Graph, para ayudar a los equipos a realizar reuniones eficientes, crear tiempo para trabajo enfocado, y respetar las fronteras del trabajo/vida. Las organizaciones pueden utilizar datos agregados en Workplace Analytics para identificar oportunidades para mejorar la colaboración, luego compartir información de valor y sugerir hábitos a equipos específicos a través de MyAnalytics.

También lanzamos nudges, impulsados por MyAnalytics en Microsoft 365, que entregan consejos en Outlook para cambiar hábitos, como avisar que se envían mails a colegas después del horario de trabajo o sugerirles apartar tiempo de trabajo enfocado para ustedes.

4 – Trabajar con otras personas en un lienzo digital compartido con Microsoft Whiteboard

Microsoft Whiteboard ahora está disponible a nivel general para Windows 10, llegará pronto a iOS, y en versión previa en web. Ya sea que se reúnan en persona o de manera virtual, la gente necesita la posibilidad de colaborar en tiempo real. La nueva aplicación Whiteboard permite a la gente idear, repetir y trabajar en conjunto tanto en persona como de manera remota, a través de múltiples dispositivos. A través de la pluma, el tacto y el teclado, pueden anotar, crear tablas y formas, dibujar a mano alzada y buscar e insertar imágenes desde la web.

IoT 向けのシンプルな SaaS である Azure IoT Central には、IoT のベスト プラクティスを実践するためのさまざまなサポートが組み込まれているほか、世界水準のセキュリティとスケーラビリティが備わっているため、クラウドの専門知識がないお客様でも簡単にご利用いただくことができます。Azure IoT Central には、SaaS アプリのメリットを存分に活かせるよう随時新機能を追加してきたため、お客様は運用環境で使用できるレベルのアプリを、インフラストラクチャの管理を気にすることなく、すぐに構築していただくことができます。

パブリック プレビュー (英語) の開始以来、IoT Central には多くの新機能が追加され、機能強化が行われ、さらに操作性が向上してきました。各機能の詳細については今後詳しく紹介する予定ですが、ここでは新たに追加された機能にスポットを当ててご説明したいと思います。

状態の測定

デバイスの状態はこれまでテレメトリやトリガーされたイベントを使用して測定されてきましたが、今後はデバイスの状態を定義して、質的な面から測定できるようになりました。状態の測定により、そのデバイス全体や各コンポーネントのその時点での状態のレポートが送られるようになったため、たとえば、コネクテッド製品のエアコンに 2 種類の状態 (オン/オフ) がある場合、ユーザーはすべてのコネクテッド デバイスとそれらの今の状態をすぐに確認することができます。詳細については、状態の測定に関するドキュメントをご覧ください。

イベント監視テンプレート

IoT Central では、リモート監視機能をさらに拡張するために、デバイスのイベント監視機能のサポートを継続的に追加しています。今回、ユーザーはシンプルかつ直観的な UI を利用して、自分のデバイスから重大なイベントを監視するルールを設定したり、問題発生時には数分以内にアラートを受け取ることができるようになりました。詳細については、イベント監視に関するドキュメントをご覧ください。

デバイスの一括インポート/エクスポート

IoT Central に多数のデバイスを接続するのは非常に厄介な作業です。これまで、多数のデバイスを一度に接続する作業はエラーが起きやすく、ほとんどが手作業だったためセットアップに時間がかかるという問題がありました。しかし今後は、手作業で作成した簡単な CSV ファイル、あるいは既存の資産管理システムや ERP システムからエクスポートした CSV ファイルを使用するだけで、IoT Central に多数のデバイスを一度に登録できるようになりました。また、デバイスの ID とそれに対応するデバイス接続文字列を CSV ファイルとしてダウンロードして、資格情報をデバイスに自動でフラッシュすることも可能です。この変更により、アプリケーションのスケールアップと複製が大幅に楽になりました。

場所および地図サービス

ブログ記事「Azure Maps を備えた Azure IoT Central の場所および地図サービス (英語)」でご紹介したように、現在 IoT Central では Azure Maps を活用しています。この新しい機能セットにより、多数のユース ケースに対応した強力な地理空間サービスが新たに実現し、ユーザーは場所データに地理的コンテキストを追加して Location プロパティを入力するだけで、場所情報を検証したり、空間的なデバイスの場所を参照したり、デバイス周辺でユース ケースをジオフェンスとして設定したりできるようになりました。

新しいアカウント管理ツール

サブスクリプションなしで試用版の利用が可能に

IoT Central を気軽に試せるように、Azure サブスクリプションがなくても IoT Central の試用版をご利用いただけるようになりました。つまり、アカウント設定に必要なのは、メール アドレスだけです。IoT Central の利用を開始する方法の詳細については、こちらをご確認ください。

試用版の管理がセルフサービスで可能に

特に SQL Server のお客様の場合、今年の第 4 四半期初めに Azure SQL Database Managed Instance の一般提供が開始されるため、SQL Server との完全な互換性を備えたきわめてコスト効率の良いデータベースを展開できるようになります。クラウドに移行できるうえ、旧バージョンも引き続き利用できるという、まさにベストなオプションです。移行についてだけでなく、オンプレミス サーバーの最新バージョンへのアップグレードや、Azure への移行と併せたアップグレードについてもサポートされます。これらのオプションの詳細については、こちらのブログ記事 をご覧ください。

Azure ハイブリッド特典を利用すれば、実行している Windows Server または SQL Server のバージョンにかかわらず、他のどのクラウド サービスよりもコストを節約することができます。Azure ハイブリッド特典では、Azure で Windows Server または SQL Server を実行するコストを最大 55% 節約できます。つまり、Windows Server や SQL Server を実行する環境として、これ以上優れた場所はありません。

Linux、MySQL、PostgreSQL、NoSQL など、あらゆるワークロードを Azure に移行

現在 Azure で実行されている VM の 40% 以上を Linux VM が占めていますが、RedHat Enterprise Linux、SUSE Enterprise Server、Ubuntu、CentOS、Debian といった主要なディストリビューションもすべてサポートされています。マイクロソフトが提供する Azure 移行ツールでは、これらの Linux ディストリビューションを評価して移行することも可能です。

私が知るだけでも、Azure への移行で目覚ましい成果を挙げたお客様は大勢いらっしゃいます。そのうちの 1 社が、トラック輸送および運送サービス会社の J.B. Hunt です。同社は業務をデジタル化する際に、ミッション クリティカルな物流アプリケーションを Azure に移行し、さらに、オンプレミスのサーバーも維持することを決断しました。

また最近では、MySQL や PostgreSQL のオンプレミス データベースを Azure のフルマネージド型データベース サービスへ移行する動きや、NoSQL データベースを Azure Cosmos DB へ移行する動きが顕著に見られます。こうした移行をすばやく簡単に行えるようにするために、今月末に Azure Database Migration Service (英語) で Azure Database for MySQL と Azure Database for PostgreSQL のサポートを開始する予定です。

コンサルティング業務、保険のブローカー業務、各種ソリューションを提供する世界有数のグローバル企業である Willis Towers Watson は、Azure Database Migration Service を使用してダウンタイムなしに複数のデータベースの Azure への移行を成功させています。
 
Willis Towers Watson の IT 担当役員兼サービス ディレクターを務める Greg Matuskovic 氏は次のように話しています。「Azure Database Migration Service は、当社にとってデータベースの Azure への移行の助け舟でした。このサービスのおかげで、100 以上のデータベースをスムーズに Azure に移行でき、ダウンタイムやデータ損失は一切なく、期間も 2 か月程度で済みました。他の方法を採用していたら、この移行プロセスだと 6 か月以上はかかるはずですし、数日から数週間のダウンタイムも発生していたでしょう」

SQL Server および Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 のサポート終了による影響を教えてください。

延長セキュリティ更新プログラムはいつ購入できるようになりますか。

延長セキュリティ更新プログラムの販売は、SQL Server および Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 のサポート終了が近づいた時点で開始される予定です。ただし、サポート終了前に刷新の計画を策定できるように、現段階から各オプションを評価することをお勧めします。

I was asked by a customer recently to configure SCOM to monitor Dell EMC SANs. The request seemed easy enough, until I got to doing it and realized that the documentation is, well, less than stellar. As such, this will be a quick post as to how we managed to get this working. I’m not 100% sure that every step listed in here is needed, but this is what we did to accomplish that task.

First, the instructions. The best documentation we were able to find was not off of Dell’s site, sadly. It was here on systemcenter.wiki. Even that, however, appears to be a bit out of date. Dell’s instructions said the following:

1. Install the ESI Service
2. Configure the ESI service connection.
3. Publish the connection.
4. Import the Management Packs.

The “how” was missing from their documentation, and their online video that was supposed to show us how only showed us what it looked like once done. I’m sure there’s some better documentation out there, or at least I’d like to hope there is, but I was unable to find it and as such I’m publishing this article.

Installing the ESI Service

First we needed to find that. This too wasn’t easy. There was no ESI service download from Dell’s site. We did find it eventually, as it’s included in the ESI PowerShellSetup files that they made available for download. That was mentioned in the description of the download. There were several versions available, but for what it’s worth, we did not get the latest version to work and had to settle on 5.1.0.3. This may have been due to a few reasons. I suspect in retrospect that this is because the ESI service may be dependent on the Unisphere CLI component; however, the installer did not call this out as a dependency and let us proceed without it. Also, I will note that one of the big problems we had is that we installed the PowerShell patch that they provided. This did not uninstall, making rollbacks impossible. I would advise against this without a snapshot in advance and understanding of what this patch is doing and if you need it.

On to the steps.

• Download the files. As mentioned before, we only got 5.1.0.3 working. These are the files as they are named on the Dell portal. We needed the ESI.5.1.0.3PowerShell.Setup, ESI.5.1.0.3.GUI.Setup, UnisphereCLI-Win32-x86-en_US-3.0.0.1.16-1, and the ESI.SCOM.ManagementPacks.5.1.0.3.Setup. 
  

  I would note that we never got 5.2.0.9 working. There’s no GUI for it, which we needed, but there could have been other factors there, so I don’t want to say it won’t work. I will state that the GUI MMC kept crashing every time we launched it in this configuration.

• We installed all of these from an administrative command prompt to get around UAC issues. The first piece we installed was the UnisphereCLI file. This is supposedly only needed for certain adaptors, but since we were using a Unity adaptor, this was a requirement. This may not be necessary depending on our SAN’s adaptor, though I’m not convinced that this isn’t a component for ESI as well.
• Next, we installed the 5.1.0.3 PowerShell setup and then the GUI setup. I’ll note one other issue we had (though it was with 5.2.0.9), was that the AD publishing piece kept crashing on a Server 2016 build during install, as such, we decided to use the options to publish locally for this piece. Everything else was default.
• Last, we ran the management packs. This is a typical MP extraction. We will need to import them later.

Configuring the ESI Service Connection

Once everything is installed and working, you should be able to successfully launch the EMC Storage Integrator MMC icon created during the install. What we need to do here is tell the ESI service to talk to the SAN devices that you want to monitor. This part is fairly straight forward, though you will need to have some sort of storage credentials to talk to this, so someone from your storage team may need to be involved.

• Launch the EMC Storage Integrator.
• Right click on “Storage Systems” and choose “Add Storage System”.
  
• Choose your adaptor type, and fill out the appropriate information (note that each type may have a different set of info, this screenshot is for Unity only). Definitely test the connection before clicking add.
  
• Repeat until all connections are added.

Publish the Connections to ESI

At this point, we need to publish this information. We chose the local host during setup, so effectively that means this info is stored locally. Active directory is an option, though as I mentioned earlier, this kept crashing during install. This could have been our lab, a bug in their software, or who knows. We didn’t spend a lot of time figuring that out as a local connection was acceptable. This too is done from the EMC Storage Integrator.

• Right click on the EMC Storage Integrator MMC icon (from within the MMC) and choose the option to Publish Connection.
• This box appears:
  
• You’ll need to change the Publish to Target option to the ESI Service. Strangely enough, this would crash if we added any value in the “Target Host field,” so we left it blank. We kept the default installs during the various setup routines, so if you configured custom ports, no SSL, etc., you’ll need to change that accordingly.
• Next step, is to click “Refresh”. That will display your targets in the left pane. They did not automatically appear here. Select the appropriate targets and click “Add”.
• After that’s done, the Publish button will no longer be gray and you can click “Publish”.

Import the Management Packs

At this point, we are in the home stretch… or so we thought at least. We went ahead and imported the 5.1.0.3 management packs that we extracted earlier. The ESI service discovered as expected. Nothing else did. So now more digging. The problem is that the next discovery is disabled by default. That isn’t bad practice per se, but it would be nice if there had been any documentation on this, as you’ll need to do this in order to actually get good data into SCOM.

• From the Authoring workspace, expand “Management Pack Objects,” and select “Object Discoveries”.
• Do a find for “EMC SI Service Discovery”.
  
• You can see that this is disabled by default. I’m not exactly sure why this is targeted at Windows Computer and not the ESI Service that was already discovered, but I didn’t have access to the people that wrote this. Go ahead and perform an override. You can likely override just for the object that hosts the service, though we did all objects of the class. It’s worth noting that you do need to specify the machine name in the override settings (or at least we did).
• This appears:
  
• It’s worth noting that there are lots of options here that can be overridden. We did the Enabled and ESI Service Host options, though if you have customizations, proxy, ports, accounts, etc., that should be included here. I would note that I don’t think this is being configured with SCOM run as accounts, so I’m not certain how secure it would be to put a username and password in this field.

That did it. A short time later, all of our storage pools were showing up in SCOM and monitoring was working.

For a long time cloud computing used to be the smart alternative to the good old IT shop, where server farms and applications are located at the company´s site. Cloud computing is mainstream: two of three global companies claim to have parts of their IT infrastructure migrated to the cloud naming security and reliability the main reasons for this shift. Even Germany, where more than 90 percent of the economy is represented by hesitant small and medium businesses – dubbed as the “German Mittelstand” – is moving into the cloud at a higher pace than any other market. And Azure is at the top.

But we are moving forward at an even higher speed. At Inspire we will be announcing a bouquet of cloud-related tools and services like the Microsoft Global Network that helps our customers and partners to connect their own offices and infrastructures using Azure and our global network through a unified portal. Instead of adding the cloud to your network, we’ll add your network to the cloud—and protect it with a cloud-native network security service. There will be two new services, Azure Virtual WAN (wide-area network) and Azure Firewall, that target the changing boundaries of the application landscape and both are available for preview.

We are also enhancing the bandwidth and capacity for uploading data into the cloud by expanding our Azure Data Box offering which will be available in Europe soon. With this appliance we help companies to overcome volume barriers: Up to 35 terabyte of data can be transferred from branches and offices all over the globe into the cloud.

And we move forward in enhancing our offerings for the industrial internet of things. Azure IoT Central, the industry’s first true SaaS IoT solution, is adding support for Power BI and Microsoft Flow – enabling customers to visualize real-time intelligence and create workflows. Azure IoT Central also now supports Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) subscriptions, so CSP partners can easily provision and manage Azure IoT Central applications.

These are just a few examples of announcements you can expect at Inspire. Hello all! As you might imagine, at a company like Microsoft we get a lot of questions. That's a crazy thought, right? You also might be able to imagine that we get a lot of internal emails. Even crazier, right?! In some of our internal emails, we get a Question of the Day. Sometimes these are for internal eyes only, but sometimes the information is for the world at large. I'm blogging today to share a case where the question posted resulted in information that could benefit everyone.

This question is regarding our new servicing channels, which – at first – can be kind of confusing. This Question of the Day with its answer comes from Jeff Woolsey, one of our Principal Program Managers. I found his answer really clears up the differences between the Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) and the Semi-Annual Channel (SAC).

Question of the Day

Q: My customer has questions about the Windows Server 2016, Windows Server version, 1709 and Windows Server version 1803. Can I use Windows Update or WSUS to update from Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server version 1709 or 1803?

A: Here's how the Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) and the Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) work for Windows Server.

Windows Server 2016 is LTSC only

• LTSC servicing is monthly cumulative bug fixes and security updates only, no features delivered via servicing. No features.
  
• Reread #1.
  
• LTSC is for:
  
  • Traditional apps: Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint Server, SAP, Oracle, Line of Business apps
    
  • Infrastructure workloads like Hyper-V, Software Defined Storage, Software Defined Networking
    
  • General purpose workloads: File Servers, Domain Controllers, Print Servers
    
• LTSC can be used for containers, but your developers will be unhappy because they will want the frequent updates being delivering in the SAC.
  
• SUPPORT: LTSC is supported for 5 Years of Mainstream Support and 5 Years of Extended Support. This is the model Microsoft has used for Windows Server going back almost 20 years.
  
• LTSC is available via all channels: FPP, OEM, VL, EDU
  

To summarize, the LTSC is the way we've been delivering Windows Server for almost 20 years. The LTSC is "business as usual."

Windows Server, version <xxxx> is SAC

1. SAC contains new features and new innovation targeted for new cloud apps and containers along with monthly cumulative bug fixes and security updates.
   
   1. New features and innovation get rolled into the next LTSC. See picture below.
      
2. SAC is for containers and new cloud apps.
   
3. SUPPORT: SAC is supported for 18 MONTHS. Yes, MONTHS.
   
   1. Because SAC is supported for 18 MONTHS, it's ideal for containers where DevOps simply changes out the container base image and rebuilds the container. This process usually takes MINUTES if not less.
      
   2. Because SAC is supported for 18 MONTHS, customers have overwhelmingly told us they will not use this channel for infrastructure or for traditional workloads because no one upgrades their Exchange, SAP or Storage Infrastructure every 18 months.
      
4. SAC is available to customers via Software Assurance or via Azure
   

Lastly, customers can and should use both channels. For Software Assurance and Azure customers, they have the advantage of being able to use both as appropriate and we encourage it.

• Use LTSC for your traditional apps (Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, Oracle, SAP, etc.)
  
• Use SAC for your new container and cloud apps or for your lift and shift scenarios modernizing legacy apps

Other points:

1. There is no such thing as Windows Server 2016 SAC. It does not exist. Windows Server 2016 is LTSC only.
   
2. There is no such thing as Windows Server 2016 1709 or Windows Server 2016 1803. The SAC versions are Windows Server, version 1709 and Windows Server, version 1803 respectively.
   
3. SAC is not an update of LTSC, it is a different channel. It is not pushed down via WU or available via WSUS. It requires a new installation. This is logical because SAC and LTSC target different scenarios with different support lifecycles. SAC targets containers and fast-moving application where an 18-month support lifecycle is easily manageable, while LTSC targets traditional application are deployed and a 10 year support lifecycle is desirable.
   

The LTSC and SAC Relationship

To better understand the relationship between the two channels see the diagram below. Notice that LTSC and SAC will simultaneously ship and then SAC will continue forward being release twice a year. That innovation is focused on containers and cloud applications. Within 2-3 years, the two release sync again and all of the application innovation from the SAC releases are rolled into the next LTSC release along with innovation for traditional apps and infrastructure roles.

In terms of upgrades, we will offer in-place upgrades from Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016 to Windows Server 2019 as they are both part of the same channel. In terms of the SAC channel, containers are serviced differently than traditional deployments. With containers, upgrading the base involves replacing the base image and rebuilding the container which is part of a continuous integration, continuous development model.
