Over on the Windows Server Blog Jeff Woolsey just posted some new information on the hardware scalability enhancements in Windows Server 2016, here’s a table that highlights these improvements.

Now I need to go out to our local server partners to see who can loan me a server that pushes these boundaries so that I can share some great screenshots in TaskMan and PerfMon.

SM Energy is an upstream oil and gas company that explore, drill, and produce oil and natural gas in the United States. A solution from Microsoft partner, eLynx Technologies, which utilizes Microsoft Azure and the Cortana Intelligence Suite, allows SM Energy to monitor its oil and natural gas wells remotely and use the data it collects for predictive maintenance.

”Before SCADALynx came along, we physically had to visit each location, each day,” says Tracy Fair, Production Superintendent at SM Energy. “Not only do we have any and all the information that we could possibly need right at our fingertips, we can sit in the comfort of our office and gather this data at any point in time 25 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365.”

Chief Technology Officer of eLynx Technologies, explains the breakthroughs they’ve made: “Over the last 15 years, we’ve gathered a very large data set of historical data on these gas and oil wells. With the Cortana Intelligence Suite and Azure, we have the capability of teaching computers to look at the historical events that have occurred and then start predicting possible events in the future.”

Resetting SCOM monitors programmatically through the SDK is a useful task and can be used for multiple purposes like

• Resetting old (outdated) monitor states.
  For very old monitor states there might be no alert available anymore (because someone closed the alert without fixing the root cause (see post on Alert management scenarios) and maybe even no state change events. Resetting this monitor will either generate a new alert (if the issue still exists) or will return the MonitoringObject to a healthy state.
• Explicitly resetting a monitor e.g. as part of a SCOM alert housekeeping script.

There are a lot of blog posts and scripts available (see the scenario section below), which already cover this topic. E.g. one of my favorite posts regarding this topic is written by SCOMURR. But  none of these posts really explained the necessary components, their relationships and the required .NET methods. That’s what I want to try to catch up with in this post.

Reset workflow

What happens, when we reset a monitor?

When we force a monitor instance to reset its state:

• a specific reset task will be created
• the task will be sent to the hosting HealthService (Agent)
• the HealthService tries to reset the monitor instance and
• returns the result to the caller

As you can see from the code examples below, we can retrieve the result of this task to know exactly what had happened and if the reset was successful.

What kind of monitor do we need to reset?

Before we start: Which kind of monitors should we deal with? SCOM uses different kinds of monitors:

• Unit monitors
• Dependency rollup monitors
• Aggregate (rollup) monitors

My personal opinion on this might be debatable and I am happy to hear your feedback. IMHO it should be sufficient to reset only unit monitors and let the SCOM system reset the rollup and aggregate monitors itself during its normal processes. But if you want to reset rollup monitors, you can use the exact same methods to do so.

Can all (unit) monitors be reset?

That’s a very good question. Genereally yes, but there are a few exceptions. There are some special situations where we have non-hosted objects that are agentless monitored. When we try to reset a monitor, the Management Server might have problems to send the necessary task to the right HealthService. Windows cluster virtual server objects are a good example for that. The monitor “Free space%” for Windows cluster disk is a monitor which cannot be reset manually due to this special circumstances.
So the answer to the question is: No, there are a few monitors, which cannot be reset manually!

Components needed to reset a monitor

As you can see from the picture, you need at least 3 objects to reset a monitor:

• MonitoringObject (class instance)
  You will need this specific class instance to reset a specific monitor
• Monitor
  You need the specific monitor instance whose health state you want to reset.
• MonitorState
  You need the current state(s) of the monitor instance for the specific MonitoringObject to check, whether this monitor is in an unhealthy state. And knowing for how long it is in this state can also be quite useful.

Options to reset a monitor

From the picture you can see, that there are at least two different ways of resetting a specific monitor:

Option 1: By using ResetMonitoringState($Monitor) method of the MonitoringObject

Monitor reset scenarios

Based on the above defined reset options, you can now imagine a multitude of different monitor reset scenarios:

Based on a specific monitor

• Get the specific monitor
• Get the target class
• Get all instances of that clss
• Get the HealthState for this particular instance of the monitor
  • If it is unhealthy (and optionally matches other criteria), reset the monitor using one of the two provided option

A function that resets all instances of a specific monitor can be found in TechnetGallery.

Based on a specific alert

• Get the Alert
• From the Alert object get the monitor object and the class instance (MonitoringObject)C
• Check, if MonitoringObject is available
• Get the HealthState for this particular instance of the monitor
  • If it is unhealthy (and optionally matches other criteria), reset the monitor using one of the two provided option

A function that closes all unhealthy monitors for closed alers can be found in  TechnetGallery.

Based on a specific class instance (aka MonitoringObject)

• Get the MonitoringObject based on the ID
• Check, if MonitoringObject is available
• Get the Monitors related to the instance and filter out all Unit monitors
  • Get the HealthState for each particular instance of the monitor
  • If it is unhealthy (and optionally matches other criteria), reset the monitor using one of the two provided options

Based on all or a specific class

• Get the specific class (or all classes), which are not singleton (i.e. not Groups)
• For each class get its class instances
  • Check, if MonitoringObject is available (actively monitored)
  • Get the Monitors related to the instance and class and filter out all Unit monitors
    • Get the HealthState for each particular instance of the monitor
    • If it is unhealthy (and optionally matches other criteria), reset the monitor using one of the two provided options

Die Beratungsfirma Deloitte hat sieben häufig übersehene finanzielle Folgen von Hackerangriffen aufgelistet. Der Autor des in der englischen Ausgabe des Newsletters CFO Insights erschienen Artikel in weist darauf hin, dass derzeit beim Analysieren von Attacken meist nur die Kosten berücksichtigt würden, die durch das Bekanntwerden eines Angriffs entstehen. Dazu zählen etwa die Kosten, die durch das Benachrichtigen der Kunden über den Diebstahl von personenbezogenen Daten, durch das Bekanntwerden von geleisteten Zahlungen und durch gerichtlich oder anderweitig verhängte Strafen entstehen. Weitgehend außer Acht gelassen würden dagegen die wesentlich schwieriger zu quantifizierenden Folgen des Diebstahls von geistigem Eigentum, von Spionage, die Folgen der Vernichtung von Daten, eines Angriffs auf den operativen Betrieb eines Unternehmens und der Versuche, kritische Infrastruktur lahmzulegen. Der Report zählt sieben versteckte Kosten auf, die ein CFO bei der Kalkulation der Auswirkungen eines Cyberangriffs berücksichtigen sollte:

1. Steigende Ausgaben für Versicherungen

Unter diesen Punkt fallen Preiserhöhungen, die etwa auf einen Datendiebstahl zurückzuführen sind. In diesem Bereich liegen nur sehr wenige offizielle Zahlen vor. Laut verschiedenen Quellen von Deloitte ist es jedoch nicht ungewöhnlich, wenn Policen nach einer erfolgreichen Attacke um bis zu 200 Prozent im Preis steigen. Es gab auch bereits Fälle, in denen Unternehmen überhaupt kein Folgevertrag mehr angeboten wurde oder nur unter der Voraussetzung, dass eine Reihe von Bedingungen der Versicherung erfüllt wurde.

2. Höhere Kosten für Kredite

Laut Deloitte stuften Rating-Agenturen wie Standard & Poor’s von Hackerangriffen betroffene Unternehmen schlechter ein.

3. Störungen des Geschäftsbetriebs

Hier fasst der Autor des Reports Kosten für die Reparatur oder Neubeschaffung von Produktionsmitteln, das Errichten von temporärer Ersatz-Infrastruktur oder auch die Umorganisation des Betriebs zusammen. Aber auch die Verluste, die durch wegfallende Auslieferungen entstehen, werden unter diesem Punkt summiert.

4. Wertverluste des Kundenstamms

In Folge eines Cyberangriffs verliert eine Firma häufig Kunden. Um zu quantifizieren, wie hoch dieser Verlust ausfällt, wird abgeschätzt, wie viel das Unternehmen investieren muss, um diesen oder einen anderen Kunden neu zu gewinnen.

5. Wertverluste in Folge von Vertragskündigungen

Dieser Punkt fasst die Minderungen bei Umsatz und Gewinn zusammen, die durch Vertragskündigungen nach einem Hackerangriff erfolgen. Dabei müssen auch die zukünftigen Erträge berücksichtigt werden, die ein Vertrag voraussichtlich noch generiert hätte.

6. Wertverlust des Handelsnamens

Um zu bestimmen, wie stark sich ein Cyberangriff in diesem Punkt auswirkt, ermittelt Deloitte, wie viel ein anderes Unternehmen vor und nach der Attacke für die Nutzung des Namens einer Firma zahlen müsste.

7. Wertverlust des geistigen Eigentums

Unter dieser Überschrift werden die Wertverluste zusammengefasst, die bei den vom Unternehmen gehaltenen Patenten, geschützten Designs oder auch Copyright-Rechten entstehen. Ähnlich wie beim Handelsnamen werden die Rückgänge danach beurteilt, wie viel eine andere Firma vor und nach der Hackerattacke für die Rechte zahlen müsste.

Die Aufstellung macht einen runden Eindruck – und damit auch einen etwas beunruhigenden, da viele Unternehmen die drohenden Kosten wohl unterschätzt haben dürften beziehungsweise gar nicht parat hatten. Dank der Liste können Finanzchefs aber hoffentlich ein realistischeres Bild zeichnen.

SharePoint Online のサンドボックス ソリューションの廃止の通達に伴い、ソリューションの移行先を検討している方もいらっしゃると想定しております。今回の投稿では、プロバイダー ホスト型アドインの展開方法について紹介します。

開発方法からはじめたい方は、こちらのサイトを使用いただくことをお勧めします。

ただし、上記の開発手法を SharePoint Online で運用する場合、ネットワークの都合上、インターネット上の外部ホスト先の Web サイトにコードを展開する必要が出てきます。
今回の投稿では、外部ホスト型のアドインを展開する手順の例としてVisual Studio 2015 を使用し、弊社サービスである Azure Web App に展開する方法についてご紹介します。

プロバイダー ホスト型アドインの構成 

以下にプロバイダー ホスト型アドインの動作を簡単に紹介します。

プロバイダー ホスト型アドイン

プロバイダー ホスト型アドインはブラウザーを一度介して、ユーザー コンテキスト (SPAppContext) を受け渡すシングル サインオンです。ブラウザーから外部ホストに直接アクセスし、外部ホストからは Access Token を使用して SharePoint Online に HTTP メソッド呼び出しする動作になります。

Visual Studio で [F5] を押してデバッグした際には、プロバイダー ホスト アドイン Web サイトはローカル端末(https://localhost:44300/ ) で動作します。このモデルの場合、ブラウザーからのアクセスですので、デバッグは特に問題にはなりません。

リモート イベント レシーバー

リモート イベント レシーバーは、ブラウザーを介さず、サーバーからサーバーへの資格情報の受け渡しとなります。リモート イベント レシーバーはデバッグの時点から本番展開する必要が想定されます。

上記の通り、Visual Studio で [F5] を押してデバッグした際には、プロバイダー ホスト アドイン Web サイトはローカル端末 (https://localhost:44300/) で動作します。ネットワーク的にも、インターネット上にある SharePoint Online から、ローカル開発端末上の iisexpress 上で動いている Web サイトには直接アクセスできないため、インターネット上でアクセスできる箇所に HTTPS 443 ポートで展開する方法が必要になります。
SharePoint オンプレミス環境を持っている場合は、ローカル デバッグで試すことも可能ですが、そうでない場合は SharePoint Online からの通信を受信できるようにクラウド上に配置することが重要になってきます。

プロバイダー ホスト型アドインの展開手順

1. 外部ホストの Web の公開先アドレスを確定する。

この例では、最初に Visual Studio より一度プロバイダー ホスト型アドイン側の IIS サイトを Azure Web App として仮展開した上で、アドレスを取得します。
事前に Azure サブスクリプションを保持するログイン ユーザーを Visual Studio にて指定する必要があります。

1-1. 外部ホスト Web サイト側のプロジェクトを右クリックし [公開] をクリックします。

1-2. [Microsoft Azure App Service] をクリックします。

1-3. 展開先のロケーションを選択して [新規作成…] をクリックします。

1-4. 内容を確認して、[作成] をクリックします。

1-5. 内容を確認して [発行] をクリックします。

補足
展開先のアドレスを独自ドメイン配下にする場合は、DNS 側に CNAME レコードを追加し、上記手順で Visual Studio から発行された Web アドレスのドメインのエイリアスとします。
なお、独自ドメインを使用する場合は、プロバイダー ホスト型アドインは OAuth によるシングル サインオンのセキュリティを保つために HTTPS (SSL) が必須となりますため、サーバー証明書を取得し Azure Web App に適用することも忘れずに行う必要があります。

2. プロバイダー ホスト型アドインのアプリを正式に登録します。
2-1. https://<任意のサイト>/_layouts/15/appregnew.aspx にアクセスします。
2-2. 2 つの [生成] ボタンをクリックしてクライアント ID、クライアント シークレットを作成します。
2-3. その他、任意のタイトル、展開先のアプリドメイン (手順 1 で取得) 、リダイレクト先の URI (手順 1 で取得したアドレス配下)、などを入力します。
2-4. [作成] をクリックします。

2-4. その後、表示画面に記録されたアプリ情報の内容をすべてコピーしておきます。

3. 外部ホスト先の Web サイト プロジェクトを手直しして再発行します。

3-1. 手順 2. で生成したClientId と ClientSecret をコピーし、外部ホスト先 Web サイト プロジェクトのweb.config、appSettings の子要素に貼り付けます。

3-2. 外部ホスト Web サイト側のプロジェクトを右クリックし、再度 [公開] をクリックして [発行]し、上書きします。

4. SharePoint アドイン側のプロジェクトを手直しして、アプリ ファイル (*.app) を生成します。 

4-1. SharePoint アドイン側のプロジェクトにて、アプリ マニフェスト (AppManifest.xml) を右クリックし、[コードの表示] をクリックして詳細編集します。

4-2. ClientId をワイルドカードから、上記手順 2 で生成した固定値に変更します。

4-3. プロジェクト内の XML を開き、~remoteAppUrl で始まる URL は、すべて手順 1 で確定した絶対 URL に書き換えます。
(※ ~appWebUrl は、SharePoint ホスト型アドインのアドレスです。書き換えないよう注意ください。)

4-4. [ビルド] – [配置] をクリックして、*.app ファイルを出力フォルダに生成します。ここまででプロバイダー ホスト型アドインの作成は終了です。

アドインの配置方法

SharePoint Online 管理センターからアプリ カタログに遷移して、SharePoint 用アプリに app ファイルを追加し、各サイトにアドインを追加して動作確認ください。

アプリ カタログに追加されたアドインは、SharePoint Online の各サイトで、サイト コレクションの管理者ユーザーにより [アプリの追加] をクリックして、サイトに追加することが可能です。

アドインのデバッグ方法

Azure Web App に展開した外部ホスト Web サイトをデバッグする場合は、Visual Studio のサーバー エクスプローラからアプリケーションを選択し、右クリック メニューから [デバッガーのアタッチ] をクリックするだけで、リモート デバッグ (ローカルのソース コードで、リモート端末のデバッグ) が可能です。

Sysmon v4.12
This release of Sysmon, an advanced background monitor that records process-related activity to the event log for use in intrusion detection and forensics, introduces more powerful filtering capabilities, now reports the status of CRL checking and fixes a bug where certain configuration files could cause the driver to blue screen.

Sigcheck v2.54
This update to Sigcheck, a command-line utility that reports detailed information about images, including their signatures and VirusTotal status, as well as certificate stores, fixes a bug that could result in it reporting signed files that have been modified as having a valid signature.

Autologon v3.1
Autologon, a utility that configures Windows to automatically log on a specified user account after booting, now validates the entered credentials before accepting them.

Process Monitor v3.31
This release of Process Monitor, an advanced real-time file system, registry, process, image and network monitoring tool, fixes a bugs that caused it to crash when processing some boot logs and when saving logged events to a backing file.

Visio Online Preview for First Release

Visio Online Preview offers access to Visio diagrams in a web browser. Users will be able to easily share their processes, floor plans, organizational structure and more with anyone across the organization. For IWs who do not have Visio client installed, they can also view the diagrams in full fidelity from nearly anywhere. New Feature: Focused Inbox

Posted: August 24, 2016 | Urgency: Normal | Category: Stay Informed | Action: Awareness | Focused Inbox is a new feature coming to Office 365. Focused Inbox helps you take control of your inbox and focus on the emails that matter most. This is coming to all versions of Outlook to give you one consistent view of the important items in your inbox. We’ll be gradually rolling this out to First Release customers in September, and to the rest of the world in October. We will communicate, again, when we begin the roll-out of Focused Inbox. Focused Inbox is a refinement and improvement of a previous feature called Clutter. As Focused Inbox rolls out, we’ll stop moving messages to the Clutter folder. You will have mailbox and tenant level control of the feature to stage the rollout in a manner that works best for your organization. Update your user training, and notify your helpdesk, as needed. Office 365 Network Shutdown on Yammer – Extended by 2 weeks! + Roadmap Update

Thank you for all of your feedback on the Office 365 Network. We are on track to release the new community on the evening of September 1st. We are excited to be welcoming communities representing Azure, Windows Server and SQL Server to our new community and you will be able to join them on September 1st. As such, we will be re-branding the Office 365 Network and this calls for a URL change. There will be redirects in place on network.office.com to the new URL and to ease the transition to our existing community to the new destination, we are extending the shutdown of the network by two weeks – the Office 365 Network will shut down on September 15th. We will share the new name and URL before September 1st PST.

If you are selected, you will meet with one or more product experts (Microsoft product team members, consultants or MVPs) and one or more Office 365 content team members to discuss your goals, get advice on current challenges and envision how to enhance your solution using Office 365 and EMS. This year, we’re offering sessions in two main focus areas: enterprise security and mobility.  Note: Due to a limited number of available sessions for each focus area, not every customer will be accepted. Recently my customer asked me to create a script to remove permissions from a list, specifically it would remove all permissions except for one group that they would designate.

Started doing some research and quickly realized that there was no information out there on how to do this, so I did a lot of digging and came up with this script.

For me the big surprise was having to use the For loop instead of being able to use the ForEach loop. The reason I did this is when I was testing I go the following error message:
