Everyone’s talking about Big Data these days. But it’s much more than mere buzzword, writes Juliana Salles, senior research program manager at Microsoft Research Connections. And it’s making waves around the world.
“Nowhere is the push to understand Big Data stronger than in Brazil, where scientists have been working to better understand tropical ecosystems, human impact on the environment, biogenetics, and biodiversity,” Salles says.
That work has been on display this week at a special eScience Workshop in São Paolo. The event, cohosted by the São Paulo Research Foundation and Microsoft Research Connections, is bringing together students and researchers from around the world to explore collaboration and research opportunities in such fields as bioenergy, biodiversity and health. A few nifty Microsoft Research tools, including Layerscape, FetchClimate and Filzbach have been on display.
