Hey folks,

You may recall that a few months ago I announced some news updates about making RMS better supported for those using iOS devices (iPad, iPhone). Today, Enrique Saggese from our IP team has an additional update to that story about new support for viewing protected mail on Samsung Android devices. Here's Enrique with the details.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi folks, Enrique here. While at Microsoft we expect that soon enough everyone is happily using their Windows RT-powered tablets for all their mobility needs, we are well aware that there are a large number of users of other platforms out there and, most importantly, IT admins cannot always rule what kind of device users will be utilizing to access corporate email.

With this in mind, and as blogged previously, we have been working with mobile device suppliers and application developers to have support for IRM on the most important mobile devices and email applications out there. We are happy to announce that, beginning with Android 4.0, all Samsung tablets and phones incorporate the ability to read and author protected email through Exchange ActiveSync IRM.

With this capability right out of the box, your users of Samsung mobile devices get the ability to view protected emails, reply to them and even create their own protected emails, using Do Not Forward or your custom templates, without having to perform any special configurations other than connecting the native email client to Exchange through Exchange ActiveSync. Just by doing that, they are able to use all the IRM capabilities provided by Exchange from those devices, making the experience completely transparent for them.

Of course, if you want the extra flexibility advanced mobile clients can provide, you can always deploy the TouchDown email client for Android (or iOS, if that’s what you use) which also supports IRM in full.

Finally, I would like to use this opportunity to mention some very interesting work the Exchange team at Microsoft is doing to provide even more integration with mobile devices. As you can see if you read the Exchange team’s blog, they are preparing to release a new OWA App for mobile devices which includes IRM support. For a sneak preview, read more at http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/08/02/the-new-owa-rocks-tablets-and-phones.aspx.

Meanwhile, we continue to work to provide the full IRM experience in all popular mobile devices and we will be talking about that soon.

Enjoy!
